Our History

Wayne Herring is a lifetime resident of Schuylkill County and has lived within 5 miles of his current residence. He is an Army veteran and is proud to have served our country. Wayne is a true Skook and is as local as you can get!

Wayne came from humble beginnings and began his career in the automotive business in the 1980s. He owned a gas station/repair center. In late 1989, he started selling cars and opened his car lot. In 1992, he started his own warranty/service contract company because of the terrible customer service he experienced within existing companies.

Preferred Warranties Began

Preferred Warranties grew from a simple operation with two employees to 100 employees. It also featured a subprime finance company (PAACO), which was later sold to AFC FInance (KAR GLOBAL) in 2013. Wayne remained at the helm as President until June of 2014 when he retired.

Skook Auto Sales Dream Becomes A Reality

In March of 2014, the dream of opening Skook Auto Sales began. Since the beginning, Gerry has been at his side when Buy Here, Pay Here (BHPH) took flight in June of 2019, we also started doing outside financing to offer our valued customers even more options than before.

Skook Auto Sales now employs 15 team members that we consider family and customer service has always been the most essential component of our business. We’re locals taking care of locals we currently have only one employee residing in Reading, and the rest of our team is from our very own Schuylkill County.

Why We Give Back

At Skook Auto Sales, we believe giving back to the community is vital. The charities we support are near and dear to the heart of our owner, Wayne Herring, who has experienced his own trials and tribulations and understands the importance of giving back.

Schuylkill County's Only Homeless Shelter

In 2012 four couples got together with the goal of opening a homeless shelter. Since then, we have established the County's only homeless center, and we help hundreds of people a year transition back into the workforce or on programs and get out of homelessness.

Servants to All is our organization in Pottsville, and his wife and Wayne are still on the Board. Wayne is the Vice-Chair.

A Personal Connection With Special Needs

In September of 2008, Gerry and his wife, who is Wayne’s daughter, had a little girl who was diagnosed with multiple medical issues including severe Cerebral Palsy. His granddaughter cannot walk or talk and is prone to seizures.

Because of this, he became involved with our local Special Needs School, St Joe's School for Special Needs in Pottsville, where he also serves as Vice-Chair. They have worked hard to bring new people into new programs, including a program developed in Hungary called Conductive Education.

Recovery High School - A Dream Realized

Three years ago, a friend had a dream of opening a Recovery High School. In August of 2019, Kolbe Academy opened in Bethlehem. Wayne's wife is Secretary of the Board, and it has been part of Skook’s personal mission to help this great program.

As a recovered addict, he lost his gas station business in February of 1980 because of bankruptcy. He has been fortunate enough to have people reach out and help; that is why it is crucial for him to return the favor.

A Community Leader

Recently, Wayne was a guest speaker to the Leadership Program's graduating class at our Chamber of Commerce, and he previously served as an instructor at our Chamber’s Young Entrepreneur Program. Community is important to Wayne, and he hopes that in the end, he will be remembered for helping others live better lives. At the end of the day, people are what matter most.

Supporting Local During The Pandemic

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Skook Auto Sales has bought and distributed thousands of dollars worth of local restaurant and grocery gift cards to those who have been affected or lost their jobs because of shutdowns. We know so many members of our community have had their lives altered at no fault of their own. Providing these gift cards is just a small way we can help.

The Herring’s place great value in giving back to these and other causes and activities in the community and use Skook Auto Sales to sponsor galas, tournaments, and other fundraisers to help out.
