When you buy from a Pennsylvania dealer, most of the PennDOT paperwork is handled for you. Here's what to expect.
What the dealer handles
- Title transfer and registration paperwork with PennDOT
- Temporary registration so you can drive home the same day
- Collecting sales tax and government fees at signing
Sales tax
Pennsylvania charges 6% sales tax on the vehicle's purchase price, less any trade-in allowance — one more reason trading in can save you money. Allegheny County and Philadelphia add local tax.
Fees you'll see
Title, registration and lien-recording fees are set by the state. Ask for an out-the-door price and you'll see every number before you sign.
Insurance first
You'll need proof of insurance before you drive away. Financed vehicles require full coverage — have your agent's number handy, or ask us for options.
Plates
If you're transferring a plate from a vehicle you're trading or selling, bring your registration card. Otherwise, permanent plates arrive by mail from PennDOT.
